The Philippines has had a special relationship with the United States since the islands were ceded by Spain to the United States after the Spanish-American War at the end of the 19th century. However, since the election of Rodrigo Duterte, the country has pivoted more toward China, and away from the U.S. Duterte has also launched a largescale war on drugs that many criticize for its brutality. What does the future hold for U.S, relations with the Philippines?
The Paul Pratt Memorial Library will offer its Great Decisions 2020
discussion program online via Zoom, an online meeting site. The Foreign Policy Association
(parent of Great Decisions) has generously opened access to its Great
Decisions DVD to everyone via youtube.
Our visiting scholars will also be
contributing their knowledge in our Zoom meetings. Following their lecture,
we will open the session up for Q&A. Each session will be recorded for those
who cannot participate in the meeting.
